ISO 19443: Quality standard for the nuclear supply chain industry

ISO 19443:2018 – Specific requirements for the application of ISO 9001:2015 by organisations in the nuclear supply chain for products and services important to nuclear safety (ITNS) – is the first internationally recognised standard for quality and safety throughout the nuclear supply chain.

The nuclear industry has recognised that companies manufacturing equipment, systems and services for it require enhanced quality management beyond ISO 9001, with a focus on establishing a safety culture. As an extension of ISO 9001, this standard aims to apply the principles of ISO 9001 specifically to the civil nuclear sector.

Achieve a high level of nuclear safety and foster a culture of quality within your organisation with ISO 19443 certification! TÜV NORD is at your side as a certification partner with extensive expertise.

Development of the ISO 19443 standard

The concept of nuclear safety culture gained widespread recognition following the analysis of the 1986 Chernobyl nuclear accident and the publication of a report on this concept by an IAEA advisory group of experts (INSAG-4). The Chernobyl accident, as well as other serious accidents such as TMI and Fukushima Daiichi, have shown that taking human and organisational factors into account are key elements in improving nuclear safety.

For this reason, ISO 19443 was published in 2018. The new standard complements ISO 9001 and aims to apply the principles of ISO 9001 specifically to the civil nuclear sector, namely:

  • Developing a high level of nuclear safety and a quality culture across all activities,
  • ensuring that the supplier provides the appropriate level of quality in the delivery of products and services that meets customer expectations and complies with applicable regulations,
  • contributing to operational excellence by supporting continuous improvement initiatives that may be necessary to achieve the expected level of quality,
  • standardising quality management systems as far as possible throughout the supply chain
  • to improve quality, lead times and costs by standardising requirements across the supply chain and through wider application of best practice

ISO 19443 is written in generic terms so that it can be used at all levels of the supply chain, for any product or service with the potential to affect nuclear safety, and by organisations around the world.

Climate change – additions to management system standards

In a joint statement issued in February 2024, the International Accreditation Forum (IAF) and the International Organisation for Standardisation (ISO) outlined the amendments to various management system standards. The statement emphasises the importance of addressing climate change within these management systems.

The amendments affect clauses 4.1 and 4.2 of the respective standard. The aim of the amendments is to ensure that organisations take climate change issues into account in relation to the effectiveness of management systems, in addition to all other aspects.
